How to choose the right Recycling bin

When it comes to recycling bins, there are some important factors, we should take into consideration in order to choose the right one for each case.

1.       Material: The material and quality of the bin is one of the most important factors in order to avoid the replacement of the bin too soon. In Cyprus, because of the high temperatures and the high percentages of humidity, the right material plays a key role especially if the bins are planned to be placed outdoors, close to the pool or in seaside environments. Moreover, in case of outdoors placement the anti-vandalism characteristics are obviously an advantage. In case of indoors use it is equally important to select the right material.

This means that the material of the bins should be carefully selected in order to avoid any short-term damage due to rust. For that, before purchasing any bin, ask if this is suitable for the environment where this will be placed.

2.       Capacity: The capacity of the bins is related to the point where the bin is placed. The bin must be large enough to avoid overflowing and too often need for emptying, but not too large in order to facilitate the emptying of the bin and not to be too heavy or smelly (especially in the indoors environment).

3.       Appearance: For many, the appearance of the bin is one of the most important factors, especially when it is place in newly constructed buildings, 5* hotels and modern cities and parks. However, other than the nice appearance and design, a recycling bin must be both discreet and distinctive. Discreet as not to affect the interior or exterior design of the area where it will be placed, and distinctive enough as to be visible so it is been used to the maximum.

Having a recycling bin in a prominent position show to the guests/clients the environmental attitude of the company/municipality.

4.       Communication: Regardless the structure of the bin (one unit with several openings, or separate bins), it is very important to have the correct indication of the recycling materials to be placed in each opening/bin. This can be done, by having clear indications on the bin (in the form of text or icons) and strengthen it by having different colour on each opening (Colour coding system).

5.       Apertures: This goes mainly on the Office recycling bins as the items discarded are more controlled or need to be more controlled. This means that the aperture is enough only for the item intended in each bin. For example, for the paper recycling the bin should have a thin aperture enough for a paper, in order to place only office papers and avoid throwing anything else. This facilitates the correct use of the bin, and therefore it is not necessary to sort again the recyclables afterwards.
